Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 Hour Rule

Greetings!

We issued our second news release in as many weeks yesterday using a number of online news release services and I wanted to share some of the contents with you. The news release headline is "Entrepreneur is a Living Example of the 10,000 Hour Rule". The release is designed to help promote the fact that more than 1500 of our hand-painted watercolor paintings of football, baseball and hockey uniforms are being made available for sale for the first time.

The 10,000 hour rule you ask?

Social commentator and writer Malcom Gladwell (author of Tipping Point, Blink and Outliers) writes in his 2008 book Outliers that the key to success in almost any field is practicing a specific task for at least 10,000 hours.

My point is that I think I somewhat prove his thesis in that I spent almost fifteen years researching NFL, MLB, NHL, CFL and NCAA college football uniforms, the result of which was the creation of a treasure trove of more than 1500 hand-painted watercolor paintings of football, baseball and hockey uniforms.

The news release made the point that I enjoy dreaming of ideas AND doing my best to make them happen. The release uses the example that when I learned that the Montreal Forum was going to be torn down in 1996, leaving Maple Leaf Gardens as the last remaining arena of the “Original Six” NHL teams, I got to work honoring the great arenas of hockey with the best selling poster “The Original Six”, a poster that sold well over 350,000 copies.

Since that eureka moment almost fifteen years ago, I spent well more than 10,000 hours researching the history and evolution of stadiums, ballparks and arenas and especially uniforms of teams from the NFL, MLB, NHL, NCAA college football and CFL, and thus find myself as a "uniform expert".

I know it sounds like I'm blowing my own horn, but the truth of the matter is that this may be one of the best selling posters in Canadian history, something I am very proud of. Please note: In my next blog, I'll tell the story of this, our first, poster.

In the news release I go on to say that “I spent so much time researching sports uniforms, that I’m sure my friends were afraid to invite me to dinner for fear I would regale them with stories of the crest on the 1933 Pittsburgh Steelers jersey or the 1960 Denver Broncos socks. By the way, do you have time for a story about the players’ strike because of the tassels on the 1930’s Black Hawks jersey?”

For the record, over a period of almost 15 years, I researched and gathered vast amounts of source material which I then provided to a small team of highly skilled artists. In turn, the artists took the research and created highly detailed watercolor paintings based on the research material. I also am a meticulous record keeper, and I have research files for every single season of every NFL, MLB and NHL team and many NCAA football teams.

In all, I have more than 10,000 file folders full of newspaper clippings, photographs, photocopies, trading cards, media guides and much more. The research was used to create what is most likely the largest collection of sports art in the world, and now almost all of this remarkable original artwork is being offered for sale.

Each of the more than 1500 pieces can be purchased in one of three formats:

1. The raw, unframed artwork

2. A “Classic” framed version (add $75 to the price of the unframed art)

3. A “Deluxe” framed version (add $100 to the price of the unframed art)

Prices range from $350 up to $1000 per piece (US$) with the vast majority of pieces starting at the $350 price. These prices include UPS delivery in North America. The news release also makes the point that these pieces would make an ideal gift for any sports fan – anniversary gift, retirement gift, major birthday gift, graduation gift, wedding gift. Or a sports fan could buy it as a gift to themselves because they want to own a piece of history that celebrates their team and their fandom.

This art is unique and one-of-a-kind, and unlike a good deal of sports art, it is very tasteful. I explain in the release that in making the original art available for sale for the first time, "I realize that there are going to be a lot of disappointed fans. Take the Boston Red Sox for instance, we know that there are at least ten million people who are proud to identify themselves as Red Sox fans, yet we only have 18 pieces of original art. So if you would like to buy the 1902 Boston Americans (now Red Sox) uniform artwork – the Broncos first season - or the Red Sox 2004 World Series winning uniform artwork, you have to move quickly because once that one original piece of art sells, that’s it – there are no more. We are only going to be able to please 18 Red Sox fans and I’m afraid we are going to disappoint thousands.”

The news release closes with the oft heard refrain: To view and/or purchase any of the more than 1500 pieces of original art being offered for sale, please visit the website devoted to the sale of this artwork. This site allows fans to search by team name, or city, or even championship winning teams.

Or fans could visit Sillcox’ “Heritage Sports Art” YouTube Channel or simply search YouTube for their favorite team and add the words “uniform art”. These videos explain in depth what is being offered for sale and viewers can get a great sense of the original artwork.

Or fans could read Sillcox’ uniform and stadium history blog where they can learn more about a particular team’s uniform and stadium history.

The World’s Largest Collection of Sports Artwork!!!

Greetings!

We issued a news release yesterday using a number of online news release services and I wanted to share some of the contents with you - the news release headline is "Possibly the World’s Largest Collection of Sports Artwork Captures the History of the NFL, MLB, NHL, CFL and NCAA College Football in Record Proportions". The release is designed to help promote the fact that more than 1500 of our hand-painted watercolor paintings of football, baseball and hockey uniforms are being made available for sale for the first time.

As you may know, I was the owner of Toronto based Maple Leaf Productions from 1993 to 2009 and during that time we researched, designed and manufactured a family of products that celebrated the evolution of team uniforms. At the core of this entire project were the images of the uniforms themselves – hand-painted, original watercolor paintings on archival paper. These images were then used to create posters, framed prints, clocks, fridge magnets, playing cards, mousepads, collector plates, and many other products – each of which celebrated the history of a particular team’s uniform.

I have been asked many times if I know of a bigger collection of sports art, and I have to say that I have never come across a collection as large as this. To be honest, I can’t imagine anyone else being crazy enough to spend the time and money that we did to create such a massive collection of original art. It was a bit of an obsession for me, but as I look at the collection of original art that we created, I am extremely proud of each and every piece – each of the 1500+ pieces of art has a story to tell.

The process of creating the art began with me and a small team of like minded folks researching and gathering vast amounts of source material which we then provided to a small team of highly skilled artists. In turn, the artists took the research and created highly detailed watercolor paintings based on the research material. Creating watercolor paintings was the way I felt I could develop and maintain a consistent look and feel for the entire collection of sports uniform art, something that was very important to the success of the whole project.

My thinking was that even if we had access to the actual jerseys, which wasn’t always possible if for no other reason than many of them no longer exist [of the 1500 uniforms, as many as 400 jerseys no longer exist], it would have been almost impossible to photograph each jersey in a continuously consistent viewpoint and light such that the final product would be able to properly tell the tale of a particular team’s uniform evolution. By creating highly detailed watercolor paintings, we could control the look and feel of each uniform such that when the team uniform evolution was shown as a collection, it would be pleasing to the eye of a fan.

The news release also explains that each of the more than 1500 pieces of original artwork being offered for sale can be purchased in one of three formats:
1. The raw, unframed artwork
2. A “Classic” framed version (add $75 to the price of the unframed art)
3. A “Deluxe” framed version (add $100 to the price of the unframed art)
and that the prices range from $350 up to $1000 per piece (US$) with the vast majority of pieces starting at the $350 price.

Format/Option 1

Format/Option 2

Format/Option 3

I also wanted to make the point that these pieces of art would make an ideal gift for any sports fan – anniversary gift, retirement gift, major birthday gift, graduation gift, wedding gift. Or that someone could buy one for their own home or office because they are a huge fan and would like to own a piece of history celebrating their team and their fandom. This art is unique and one-of-a-kind, and I don't mean to insult other people who have created sports artwork, but unlike a good deal of sports art, this artwork really is very tasteful.

From a sales point if view, I realize that once we get the word out, the possibility exists that there are going to be a lot of disappointed fans - that may sound odd but I think it's true. Take the Denver Broncos for instance, we know that there are more than one million people who are proud to identify themselves as Broncos fans (something we know through Facebook, fan forums and other web groups), yet we only have 13 pieces of original art. So if someone wants to buy the 1960 Broncos’ uniform artwork – the Broncos first season - or the Broncos’ 1997 Super Bowl winning uniform artwork, once the word gets out they will have to move quickly because once that one original piece of art sells, that’s it – there are no more. We’re only going to be able to please 13 Broncos fans and I’m afraid we’re going to disappoint thousands.

The new release ends with an explanation of the:
1. website devoted to the sale of this artwork
2. my YouTube channel where people can see a video on their team's artwork
and
3. this uniform, jersey and stadium history blog

In a future post I will let you know some of the results of issuing the news release - this is all a learning process and it will be fun to watch what happens.

Heritage Uniforms and Jerseys goes Technorati

Greetings!

I get a little smarter every day, or at least that's the hope! As I learn more and more about electronic marketing, the more fun it gets - my hope is that after another month or two the pieces will all begin to mesh together and that I will be able to take the tangle of information that I have accumulated and create order out of chaos.

What I learned today relates to a thing called Technorati - Technorati is a very powerful and well respected blog that summarizes and catalogues blogs from around the world - almost 1.5 million blogs!

In order for my blog to be registered with Technorati, I have to embed a code in a recent blog posting, and here it is in all its glory: 9HYQ2S3X25B4 . Now that wasn't too hard?!? We'll see where this takes us. In the meantime, forgive me for boring you to tears with this blog posting.

So here's a tidbit to make this posting Heritage Uniform oriented:

In my very first posting on this blog I wrote about Charles A. Coleman's remarkable three volume set "The Trail of the Stanley Cup". It seems Mr. Coleman feels that the Detroit Red Wings franchise changed their name from the Cougars to the Falcons at the beginning of the 1929-30 season, yet everywhere else in the entire internet, including the official sites of the NHL and the Detroit Red Wings, they say that the team changed from Cougars to Falcons prior to the start of the 1930-31 season. Care to offer your opinion on which is right?

I will do the research over the next several weeks and get back to you.

I can't help but feel Mr. Coleman has it right...

Thanks -
Scott Sillcox

Toronto Maple Leafs - Franchise, Team, Arena and Uniform History

Almost all of the actual original watercolor paintings used in this poster are available for sale – see Section 5 of this blog.

Fall 2023: To purchase a reasonably priced 8" x 24" plaqued mounted version of the Leafs poster that's ready to hang on your wall, please visit Heritage Sports Stuff.

=============================================

1. Toronto Maple Leafs – The Franchise History
This franchise was established (by established we mean the year of the franchise’s first game) in 1917. The franchise has been known as:
Toronto Blue Shirts and Torontos 1917-18
Toronto Arenas 1918-19
Toronto St. Patricks 1919-1927
Toronto Maple Leafs 1927-Present

Please note: There is a bit of controversy and confusion surrounding Toronto's team nickname in their inaugural 1917-18 season - a season that they won the Stanley Cup! I rely on a great 40 page book and research published by John Morrison and Doug McLatchy in 1996 called "The Toronto Blue Shirts aka The Torontos - Stanley Cup Champions 1917-18". Allow me to quote from their great work: "After extensive and exhaustive research we are now certain that in the 1917-18 season the hockey team in Toronto was known as The Torontos or the Toronto Blue Shirts. Both these names were commonly used by the newspapers of the day but nowhere have we been able to see any reference to The Toronto Arenas until the 1918-19 season. However, all modern records, stats and reference material [incorrectly] refers to The Toronto Arenas for the 1917-18 season." The authors go on to explain that the confusion stems from the very muddled ownership situation of the Toronto franchise in this period of time.

I have a 4 page pdf document with more details about the 1917-18 team name that I'd be happy to share if you fire me an email at ssillcox@rogers.com. I call the document "Toronto Maple Leafs team name in 1917-18".

2. Toronto Maple Leafs – Championships/Great Accomplishments
Thirteen Stanley Cup Championships:
1917-18 defeated Vancouver Millionaires 3 games to 2
1921-22 defeated Vancouver Millionaires 3 games to 2
1931-32 defeated New York Rangers 3 games to 0
1941-42 defeated Detroit Red Wings 4 games to 3
1944-45 defeated Detroit Red Wings 4 games to 3
1946-47 defeated Montreal Canadiens 4 games to 2
1947-48 defeated Detroit Red Wings 4 games to 0
1948-49 defeated Detroit Red Wings 4 games to 0
1950-51 defeated Montreal Canadiens 4 games to 1
1961-62 defeated Chicago Blackhawks 4 games to 2
1962-63 defeated Detroit Red Wings 4 games to 1
1963-64 defeated Detroit Red Wings 4 games to 3
1966-67 defeated Montreal Canadiens 4 games to 2

3. Toronto Maple Leafs – Home Arena History
The Leafs have played in the following three home arenas:

1. Arena Gardens (named Mutual Street Arena in 1932), Toronto
1917 – 1931
Arena Gardens Toronto 1917-1931

2. Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto

If you are wondering about the sculpture at the west entrance... When the Air Canada Centre was being built, the owners commissioned Toronto-born steel sculpture artist John McEwen to create an art fixture to welcome fans into the arena. The resulting three-column steel sculpture is inspired by a quote from author Louis Untermeyer (1885-1977) "God, if you wish for our love, Fling us a handful of stars." 2. Kiel Centre / Savvis Center / Scottrade Center / Enterprise Center, St. Louis

5. Celebrate the Blues' jersey history by owning a famous piece of jersey artwork:
If you love the St. Louis Blues and the history of the Blues franchise, you might really love to own an original piece of artwork celebrating the team's historic jerseys as seen in the poster at the top of this blog - you can actually own one of those original pieces of art! There are only 14 pieces of original art available for sale, and when these 14 are sold, that's it, they're all sold out.

These original watercolor paintings would make a great gift (birthday gift, anniversary gift, retirement gift, Christmas gift, etc.) for someone you love or even a great gift for yourself (one of these framed pieces would look fantastic in your home or office). Each piece can be bought one of three ways:
1. As unframed art that you could have framed or mounted yourself (the one on the left)
2. Framed in our "Classic" framed version (the middle version)
3. Framed in our "Deluxe" framed version (the version on the right)

If you would like more information about this great artwork including the three ways you could purchase each piece, please visit our St. Louis Blues YouTube video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQYgMEW7pVw or go directly to the artwork website www.heritagesportsart.com/St.-Louis-Blues-c189/ where you can see and purchase the artwork.

And if someone you know loves the history of sports uniforms (but maybe another team) and loves great art, please let them know that we have over 1500 pieces of great original artwork for sale at www.heritagesportsart.com (all NFL teams, all MLB teams, all NHL teams, all CFL teams, select NCAA football teams) or check out each team's video at the Heritage Sports Art YouTube Channel www.youtube.com/user/ssillcox .

6. The original pen and ink drawings of the arenas shown above are also for sale.
Please note that the actual original, highly detailed, hand-drawn pen and ink sketches used for the 2 arena images shown above are available for sale as a complete collection to one Blues fan. If you are interested in being the one and only owner of this complete and original collection of St. Louis Blues arena images, please contact me by email ssillcox@rogers.com and I can explain how they can all be framed in one beautiful piece.
