San Jose Sharks - Franchise, Team, Arena and Uniform History

San Jose Sharks uniform evolution poster

Oct 2023: This is a prototype poster and is not yet available for sale. When the San Jose Sharks posters are available for sale, they will be available from Heritage Sports Stuff as reasonably priced 8" x 24" plaqued posters that are ready to hang on your wall.

Oct 2023: Almost all of the 7 actual original watercolor paintings used in this poster are available for sale – see Section 5 of this blog.

1. San Jose Sharks – The Franchise History
This franchise was established (by established we mean the year of the franchise’s first game) in 1991-92. The Sharks were the first expansion team to join the NHL since 1979 and were the NHL's 22nd team. The team has always been known as the San Jose Sharks.

2. San Jose Sharks – Championships/Great Accomplishments
No Stanley Cup Championships

One Stanley Cup finals appearance:
2015-16 lost to Pittsburgh Penguins 4 games to 2

One Western Conference Championship:

Six Division Championships:
2001-02 Pacific Division Champions 99 points: 44 wins - 27 losses - 8 ties - 3 OT
2003-04 Pacific Division Champions 104 points: 43 wins - 21 losses - 12 ties - 6 OT

2010-11 Pacific Division Champions 105 points: 48 wins - 25 losses - 9 OT losses

3. San Jose Sharks – Home Arena History
The San Jose Sharks franchise has played in two home arenas, although their second home rink has  been known by four names in its 30-ish year history. The SAP Center is also nicknamed The Shark Tank.

1. Cow Palace 1991-1993
A pen and ink aerial view image of the Cow Palace will be added Q1 2024.

2. SAP Center 1993-Present
The SAP Center has also been known as:
San Jose Arena 1993-2001
Compaq Center 2001–2002
HP Pavilion 2002–2013
SAP Center (aka SAP Center at San Jose) 2013-Present

A pen and ink aerial view image of the SAP Center will be added Q1 2024.

4. For more information on the San Jose Sharks, you should visit/bookmark these great websites:

A. I personally think Wikipedia keeps getting better and better with each passing year – here is the San Jose Sharks Wikipedia site:

B. For a great season-by-season summary of each San Jose Sharks season:

C. These guys do a great job of team (and player) stats for all active and defunct franchises

D. For some good info about arenas past, present and future, visit this site (and don’t be fooled by the their name – even though it’s ballparks dot com, they do a good job on hockey arenas too):

E. For great stats on past and present players and prospects, these guys do an amazing job:

5. Celebrate the San Jose Sharks' jersey history by owning a famous piece of jersey artwork:
If you love the San Jose Sharks and the history of the San Jose Sharks franchise, you might really love to own an original piece of artwork celebrating the team's historic jerseys as seen in the poster at the top of this blog - you can actually own one of those original pieces of art! There are only 7 pieces of original art available for sale, and when these 7 are sold, that's it, they're all sold out.

These original watercolor paintings would make a great gift (birthday gift, anniversary gift, retirement gift, Christmas gift, etc.) for someone you love or even a great gift for yourself (one of these framed pieces would look fantastic in your home or office). Each piece can be bought one of three ways:
1. As unframed art that you could have framed or mounted yourself (the one on the left)
2. Framed in our "Classic" framed version (the middle version)
3. Framed in our "Deluxe" framed version (the version on the right)

If you would like more information about this great artwork including the three ways you could purchase each piece, please visit our San Jose Sharks YouTube video or go directly to the artwork website where you can see and purchase the artwork.

And if someone you know loves the history of sports uniforms (but maybe another team) and loves great art, please let them know that we have over 1500 pieces of great original artwork for sale at (all NFL teams, all MLB teams, all NHL teams, all CFL teams, select NCAA football teams) or check out each team's video at the Heritage Sports Art YouTube Channel .
